2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV Crossover Pricing Shows Pretty Can Be Pretty Affordable
The new electric SUV is stylish and loaded with tech—and no pricier than competitors.0:00 / 0:00
Hyundai is serious about expanding its electric vehicle game, which kicks off in new style with the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, its first dedicated EV. Having nearly all relevant information in hand (short of actually driving the 5), we were waiting on only one thing ahead of the Hyundai's appearance in dealerships: Pricing.
Hyundai just announced the 5's pricing, along with a few other U.S.-specific details on the electric crossover. First among those fresh details? The 58-kWh battery pack will come standard on the Ioniq 5, which also will be rear-wheel-drive. That entry-level 5 starts at just under $41,000 before any EV tax breaks customers might qualify for are factored in—right in line with competitors such as the Volkswagen ID4 and Ford Mustang Mach-E. Here's a quick spin through what to expect out of the box, and with the 5's three trim levels.
Impressive Standard Features
Even if you just go with the standard-range Ioniq 5 SE—which can deliver 220 miles of total range from its 58 kWh battery—you'll still get a lot for your money. Every Hyundai Ioniq 5 has 800-volt, 350-kW ultra-fast charging capacity. At those charge rates, the larger 77.4 kWh battery charges from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 18 minutes. You'll also get unlimited 30-minute charging sessions for two years on Electrify America chargers, though a 100-percent charge (to unlock the big-battery Hyundai's full 303-mile capability) may take longer.
The 5 will also come standard with 19-inch aero wheels, LED lighting, flush-mounted door handles that automatically pop out to greet your hand, and a hidden charge port door. Inside, you'll be treated to a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with an EV system menu, as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay phone integration. Hyundai's Bluelink system gives you remote access to charging and other vehicle functions from afar via a smartphone app.
Traffic congestion on your commute? Hyundai's Highway Drive Assist 1 includes Smart Cruise Control that works in stop-and-go traffic, plus Lane Keep and Follow Assist. Forward and reverse collision assistance with cross-traffic detection on both ends and a rear view monitor with parking guidance help make parking a little easier. There is even a blind-spot assist that also works to alert occupants of incoming traffic for safer exits while street-parked.
This is all on top of Hyundai's 10 year, 100,000 mile powertrain warranty that also covers the battery. You'll also get 3 years, 36,000 miles of complementary maintenance service for any fluid changes (yes, the battery and motor are liquid cooled, and that fluid will need changing eventually) or tire rotations.
