6 Things to Know About the 2017 Mazda CX-5
Moves closer and closer to visual perfectionMazda isn't resting on its laurels when it comes to its best-selling model in the U.S. The compact crossover originally debuted for the 2013 model year and was refreshed for 2016. Now, the Mazda CX-5 enters its second generation with fresh new sheetmetal. Here are six things to know about the 2017 Mazda CX-5 that debuts at the Los Angeles auto show this week.
If you recall, Mazda offered a Soul Red Metallic paint job on the 2016 CX-5 as a $300 option. Now, Mazda has changed things up with a new shade of red that is said to boast 20 percent greater color saturation than the older hue. Light-absorbing aluminum flakes inside the reflective coat help make shaded contours of the vehicle appear darker, while lighter areas appear extremely bright.
For the 2017 model year, Mazda shifted the A-pillars back 35mm, which Mazda says improves visibility for the driver. Mazda also lowered the center of gravity and increased the front and rear tread slightly to make it look more planted.
In pictures, the model appears to have a long nose, but it actually looks quite small in person, particularly when viewed from a front three quarter angle. Thanks to its short rear overhang, the model exudes the appearance of being shorter in length than the old CX-5. In reality, both models are about the same in length, with the new model projected to measure 179.1 inches compared to the old model's 178.7 inches in the U.S.
Up front, Mazda positioned the floor console and the shift knob higher up for easier access. The CX-5 is also the first Mazda product to offer reclining seats with a two-step mechanism. The seats are also plusher, as the newly designed cushions conform to the shape of the passenger's lower body and have heating functions.
Tech goodies include a head-up display that projects navigation directions on the windshield as well as a high-res 4.6-inch color TFT digital display to the right of the instrument cluster.
