Automatic braking system contributes to the high marks

The 2017 Kia Sorento earns Top Safety Pick+ status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety when equipped with optional front crash prevention technology.

In order to earn a Top Safety Pick+, a vehicle must earn "Good" ratings in several crash tests as well as high scores for its optional front crash prevention system. The 2017 Sorento earned a "Good" rating, the highest score offered by IIHS, in the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests.

Additionally, the Sorento's new automatic braking system earned a "Superior" rating by IIHS. The system avoided a collision in both the 12 mph and 25 mph tests. The forward collision warning system also meets criteria set forth by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. However, the Sorento only scored an "Acceptable" rating for the Child Seat Anchors (LATCH) ease of use test.

Last year, the 2016 Sorento also earned "Good" marks in all five crash categories. But its optional front crash prevention system only featured a warning system and not the new automatic braking system. It only earned a "Basic" rating in front crash prevention from IIHS.
