It's a good year to be a hatchback fan: Chevrolet is bringing their Cruze Hatch to the U.S.,Hondais coming out with a Civic Hatch again, and theFord FocusRS is finally a thing forAmericans in good ol' America. This fall when the2017 Chevrolet CruzeHatchback makes its way to dealerships it will start at $22,190, which includes an $875 destination charge. The Cruze Hatch will be available in LT and Premier trims, and additionally with the RS package. While theCruze sedanhas two lower trim levels than the hatchback (L and LS) the Cruze Hatch will come with more standard features, which should help with sales, since the $22,190 starting price makes it a bit pricier than some of the competition.

The 2017Chevrolet CruzeHatch will feature a 4G LTE data connection with a WiFi hotspot, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, wireless mobile device charging (for compatible devices), and the Teen Driver suite of driver monitoring technology. Cargo capacity is, as expected, greater than the sedan: 47.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded versus 14.8 cubic feet in the sedan's trunk. The sedan, with the same turbocharged 1.4-liter I-4, gets an EPA-estimated 29-30/41-42 mpg city/highway depending on which transmission you get. We expect the hatchback to get similar ratings from the EPA.

One thing the Chevrolet Cruze doesn't have (yet) is a serious performance model to take on the likes of theFordFocus ST (not to mention the RS) or theVolkswagen GTI. Is it time for another sporty compact from Chevrolet, in the same spirit as the late Cobalt SS? How does a Chevrolet Cruze SS sound to you? Let us know in the comments below.
