2016 Smart Fortwo to Arrive in U.S. Showrooms this Fall

Writer

The 2016 smart fortwo will make its U.S. debut at the 2015 New York Auto show next week before arriving in dealerships this September. The second-generation 2016 Fortwo has been on sale in Europe since late last year with multiple powertrains, though the U.S.-spec model will only get one engine.

Powering the microcar will be a 0.9-liter turbocharged inline-three that makes 89 hp and 100 lb-ft of torque. Transmission choices include a five-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch automatic and an all-electric powertrain is expected to eventually join the lineup. Not coming to the U.S. is a naturally aspirated 1.0-liter I-4 rated at 71 hp and 67 lb-ft (we also don't get the four-seat, four-door Forfour model).

The new Fortwo boasts a number of improvements compared to the current model. The Smart's tridion cell, essentially a safety cage, is thicker and stronger and tough enough to withstand a head-on collision with a Mercedes-Benz S-Class (with both cars travelling at 31 mph). Additionally, its turning circle improves to a tight and tidy 22.8 feet, while the interior gets an upgrade in materials, technology, and seating position.
