2016 Chevrolet Silverado HD Gets Steering Assist, Optional Bed-Towing Integration
The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado HD is getting an electronic steering assistant to help make towing and hauling easier and safer. Digital Steering Assist, available on most double cab and crew cab models, enhances steering feel and stability on the highway, particularly on crowned roads.

While Chevrolet didn’t release explicit details on the system, we’d posit that it works like many similar crosswind-assist systems that act on the power steering to reduce steering effort in the opposite direction of the crosswind or road crown, making it easier to countersteer for those conditions. Chevy says it helps with roadholding and driver confidence, whether the truck is loaded or empty. It will not be available in Work Truck or regular cab models.
Other changes slated for the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado HD include an optional gooseneck/fifth-wheel trailering prep package, which includes a spray-in headliner, frame-mounted hitch platform that accommodates gooseneck or fifth-wheel hitch brackets, and a bed-mounted trailer harness. This factory-installed package can be combined with a dealer-installed Gooseneck Completion Kit, comprised of a 2-5/16–inch ball hitch and two chain tie-downs.
Finally, electronic updates round out the changes. Available wireless phone charging, an optional remote-locking tailgate, and the most recent Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system get installed in the 2016 Silverado HD. That last feature brings along with it Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, and a faster processor gives better performance.
Along with the expected visual updates coming for the 2017 model year, these new features should help keep GM loyalists happy in the face of newfound competition from Nissan, in the form of its heavyweight light-duty Titan XD.
