Unless you’ve been living under a proverbial rock and hadn’t noticed, gas prices have shot up recently, and they’re projected to rise even higher in the short run. Everyone everywhere is feeling the pinch at the pump, and even when (if?) prices come back down, you can be assured it won’t be the last time they rise again. If you’ve been considering a more efficient model (and you’re still on the fence about EVs), perhaps this latest price surge is the push you need to finally pull the trigger on that new hybrid car you’ve been thinking about.

When you do start thinking of hybrids, chances are the Toyota Prius comes to mind first. And while that’s an excellent, affordable car (and winner of our 2024 Car of the Year award), it’s far from the only hybrid on the market today. It’s also far from the only affordable option out there, with some fantastic models from the likes of Honda, Hyundai, Kia, and Toyota that we rank among the best in class. With all that in mind, here are five hybrid cars and SUVs under $35,000 that will help save you both at the pump and the dealership.

040 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid

Honda Civic Hybrid

As an affordable compact car that can basically do it all, there’s really nothing finer than the Honda Civic Hybrid. Easy to drive, loaded with great standard features, and surprisingly practical for two people to boot, the Civic Hybrid stands out as a MotorTrend favorite. Although it’s available in either sedan or hatchback forms, the only bummer is it isn’t available with an all-wheel-drive option. Honda estimates 50/47 mpg city/highway for the sedan, and you can get into one for just $30,590 to start.

If the Civic Hybrid isn’t your thing for whatever reason—and even if it is—it’s worth checking out the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid before you pull the trigger on a compact hybrid sedan. It’s a great value with good passenger space, and the fact that it looks as cool as it does from the outside is a bonus. In addition, modern connectivity features ensure that you and your tech hook up seamlessly wherever you are. Efficiency shines brightest in the Elantra Hybrid Blue trim, which nets 51/58 mpg city/highway and starts at a super-cheap $26,695, with loaded versions topping out at less than $32,000.

Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid

For 2026, the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid gets a cute new face and better tech to help it keep up with you and all your daily needs. As an affordable alternative to the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, the Corolla Cross Hybrid isn’t as rugged as the Subaru, but it’s borderline fun to drive on pavement. For $31,045 out the door, the base model of the Toyota subcompact hybrid SUV is EPA rated at a strong 45/38 mpg city/highway. We recommend the mid-tier SE trim, which gets you technology goodies and can be had for $32,365 to start.

019 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid

Kia Sportage Hybrid

The Kia Sportage family offers a lot of options, but we found the hybrid to be the strongest at delivering excellent overall mpg and impressive value. And thanks to its added hybrid power, the Sportage Hybrid offers smoother acceleration than its gas-only counterpart. It’s available in either FWD or AWD, but we’d say go with the FWD version if efficiency and affordability are top of mind for you. In this guise, the MotorTrend top-rated compact hybrid SUV returns 42/44 mpg city/highway and can be had for a starting price of $31,985.

I got into cars the way most people do: my dad. Since I was little, it was always something we’d talk about and I think he was stoked to have his kid share his interest. He’d buy me the books, magazines, calendars, and diecast models—everything he could do to encourage a young enthusiast. Eventually, I went to school and got to the point where people start asking you what you want to do with your life. Seeing as cars are what I love and writing is what I enjoy doing, combining the two was the logical next step. This dream job is the only one I’ve ever wanted. Since then, I’ve worked at Road & Track, Jalopnik, Business Insider, The Drive, and now MotorTrend, and made appearances on Jay Leno’s Garage, Good Morning America, The Smoking Tire Podcast, Fusion’s Car vs. America, the Ask a Clean Person podcast, and MotorTrend’s Shift Talkers. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, cooking, and watching the Fast & Furious movies on repeat. Tokyo Drift is the best one.
