A grand experiment. A never-tested theory for a nation guided by Enlightenment principles. A perpetual search for a more perfect union. From plan to practice, the United States of America celebrates its 250th anniversary this year, born from the signing of the Declaration of Independence and subsequent revolution against the British Empire. History is a matter of perspective, and although 250 years feels like a long time to humans, we’re still a fledging nation despite how far we’ve come.

The beauty of the U.S. lies in its diversity—50 states with varied backgrounds and cultures. Particularly automotive. Especially automotive.

On the surface, cars are one of the fibers that weave together life in America. But dig just a bit deeper, and you’ll see all the fun, strange, and unexpected ways automobiles leave their mark on our nation.

Throughout the interactive map, we’ve assembled five car facts from each state, for a total of 250 truths that may not be self-evident, in honor of this year’s quarter-millennium celebration. (To avoid aggregation without representation, we’ve also included five for the District of Columbia.) There’s no doubt certain states have more automotive influence and history than others, but the culture exists from sea to shining sea and beyond.
