There’s finally good news for Volkswagen fans. Not only has the automaker reasserted the importance of hot hatchbacks and sedans, but news that production of the Golf will move from Wolfsburg, Germany, to Puebla, Mexico, has also drawn speculation that non-performance models could return to the United States market.

The automaker has renewed its electric vehicle efforts, as well, reintroducing the ID Buzz to the 2027 Volkswagen cars lineup. In addition to those headline-making items, Volkswagen has issued several smaller updates across the model range for the new year. Read on to see exactly what’s changed for the 2027 Volkswagen cars lineup.

Two years after a redesign, the 2027 Volkswagen Jetta returns with a handful of updates expanding tech availability at lower trims.

S and Sport models receive the Composition Media infotainment system with features such as satellite radio, voice control, a total of six speakers, and Volkswagen’s AI-assisted Premium Speech chat bot. These trims also receive standard keyless entry and push-button start. An updated rear seat belt reminder is standard across the entire lineup.

There’s some sad news for driving enthusiasts, as well: Volkswagen no longer offers the sporty Jetta GLI with a manual transmission, signaling the end of manual VW models in the United States. The GLI continues into the 2027 model year with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission as the sole option.

A refreshed Volkswagen GTI hot hatch for the 2025 model year got cosmetic tweaks and new technology, upgrades that we thought were good enough to grant the compact with our 2026 Car of the Year award.

For 2027, the GTI returns with the slightest of changes. Keyless entry and Light Assist, Volkswagen’s automatic high-beam adjustment feature, are now standard on the base GTI S trim.

The other member of the lineup that won our 2026 Car of the Year award is the Volkswagen Golf R, which isn’t getting any changes for the 2027 model year. For 2026, the extra-hot hatchback received a new paint color, Graphite Gray metallic.

2027 Volkswagen ID Buzz

Just when we thought it might be over for the all-electric version of the iconic Microbus, the 2027 Volkswagen ID Buzz returns to the automaker’s lineup.

A Tourer 4Motion model is now on offer beneath the range-topping Pro S Plus 4Motion variant. It adds a retractable tow hitch, captain’s chairs, an electrochromic smart roof, and 20-inch dark graphite wheels with black accents. Volkswagen positions the ID Buzz Tourer as the camper van model in the range, with features like a fold-out mattress, window blinds, ventilation panels, outdoor chairs, and a table, all aimed at improving life in the great outdoors.

Another addition to the ID Buzz’s lineup for the 2027 model year is the Pro S 4Motion trim, which slots over the entry-level Pro S model and below the new Tourer 4Motion camper. It expands all-wheel-drive availability to the ID Buzz’s former base trim.

The ID Buzz also gets new features for the 2027 model year. Volkswagen’s Travel Assist semi-automated driving now includes automated lane changes, better lane centering, and updated adaptive cruise control. If the driver is no longer able to operate the vehicle, Emergency Assist can automatically move the ID Buzz to the right shoulder.

Volkswagen makes fast charging easier out of the gate with a standard NACS adapter, allowing the ID Buzz to use the Tesla Supercharger network. Inside the cabin, there are now hard buttons for steering wheel controls and the latest version of VW’s infotainment software. To simplify its connected service offerings, owners only need a single In-Vehicle Premium subscription.

Finally, Volkswagen adds a Candy White over Cherry Red color scheme to deepen the retro look of the ID Buzz.

For as long as I can remember, I was always interested in cars. I’d spent countless hours playing with toy cars or reading anything and everything I could find out about them. As I got older, I began wanting to make a career out of it, in whatever way possible. I used to think I would end up in engineering or automotive design, but turns out that was trickier than I imagined… Luckily, I also had a passion for photography and after honing my skills at The Creative Circus in Atlanta, a portfolio based school, I turned my enthusiasm into a career, specializing in capturing the beauty and power of cars. As a photographer at MotorTrend, I’ve had the privilege of working on numerous features and projects, showcasing many vehicles and helping share the stories of our highly talented editors. I’m grateful for my journey so far, and I hope to share my passion for cars through my images.
