Not enough good things can be said about the current Toyota Prius. It looks fantastic, won our 2024 Car of the Year award, and consistently ranks as the most efficient hybrid vehicle currently on sale in the United States. In fact, its longstanding grasp on the segment is so pervasive and all-encompassing that the Prius name has very nearly become a genericization for hybrid cars, along the lines of Band-Aid, Xerox, or Kleenex.

When it comes to the 2027 model year Prius, buyers have a few options. The first is choosing between front- or all-wheel drive. From there, there are four grades to choose from: LE, XLE, Nightshade, and Limited.

Then there’s the plug-in version, which used to be called the Prius Prime but now just goes by the Prius Plug-in Hybrid. Simple enough. PHEV Priuses are offered in the SE, XSE, Nightshade, and XSE Premium grades; however, all-wheel drive isn’t offered with this powertrain. Only front-wheel drive.

Below is the complete lineup of Prius MPG efficiencies as rated by the EPA.

2027 Toyota Prius EPA Mileage Estimates

  • HEV LE FWD: 59/50/55 mpg city/highway/combined
  • HEV XLE/Nightshade/Limited FWD: 54/46/51 mpg city/highway/combined
  • HEV LE AWD: 56/49/53 mpg city/highway/combined
  • HEV XLE/Nightshade/Limited AWD: 51/45/48 mpg city/highway/combined
  • PHEV SE: 53/51/51 mpg city/highway/combined
  • PHEV XSE/Nightshade/XSE Premium: 50/47/47 mpg city/highway/combined

As you can clearly see, these are incredible fuel economy figures for a gas-powered car. You really can’t lose here, and even selecting an AWD drivetrain barely results in a mileage penalty. The biggest changes come from picking a grade with bigger wheels. It’s also worth noting the Prius’ overall range, which varies from 504 miles for the AWD XLE and Limited to a whopping 622 miles for the base, LE front-drive model.

For the Prius Plug-in, an additional perk comes in the form of its all-electric driving range. The EPA estimates the SE to perform up to 44 miles and the other grades up to 39. For local errands, this is perfect, and there’s always the gasoline engine to fall back on if you plan to travel farther.

Regardless of which Prius you choose, it’s in its best form yet, with only a minimal price bump for 2027. It’s what you get after 30 years of steadfast improvements and Toyota’s continued commitment to maintaining the incredible efficiency of its flagship hybrid. Indeed, it’s the Prius of hybrids.

I got into cars the way most people do: my dad. Since I was little, it was always something we’d talk about and I think he was stoked to have his kid share his interest. He’d buy me the books, magazines, calendars, and diecast models—everything he could do to encourage a young enthusiast. Eventually, I went to school and got to the point where people start asking you what you want to do with your life. Seeing as cars are what I love and writing is what I enjoy doing, combining the two was the logical next step. This dream job is the only one I’ve ever wanted. Since then, I’ve worked at Road & Track, Jalopnik, Business Insider, The Drive, and now MotorTrend, and made appearances on Jay Leno’s Garage, Good Morning America, The Smoking Tire Podcast, Fusion’s Car vs. America, the Ask a Clean Person podcast, and MotorTrend’s Shift Talkers. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, cooking, and watching the Fast & Furious movies on repeat. Tokyo Drift is the best one.
