2025 Volvo SUV Lineup: Backtracking from All-Electric?
The Swedish automaker continues to offer stylish gas, hybrid, and EV SUVs. XC90 gets a surprise update.

Volvo was one of the first mainstream automakers to commit to an all-electric lineup. To that end, it has rolled out several all-electric SUVs, including the new EX90 three-row arriving for 2025. But shifting market conditions have hindered Volvo’s zero-emissions ambitions, seen in delays on the highly anticipated EX30 subcompact EV and the brand’s recent statement that it won’t, in fact, stop producing combustion engines any time soon. The 2025 Volvo SUV lineup remains as stylish, safe, and compelling as ever, yet it indicates the uncertain state of today’s auto industry.

2025 Volvo EX30
A new small affordable electric SUV will join Volvo’s lineup this year—maybe. The EX30 was officially revealed in 2023, but its targeted on-sale timing for 2025 has been snarled by software bugs and government-imposed tariffs. The attractive subcompact crossover will offer single-motor RWD and dual-motor AWD powertrains, with the former offering up to 275 miles of range and the latter capable of 0–60 mph in an estimated 3.4 seconds. A rugged Cross Country variant could also eventually join the range. Hopefully Volvo can navigate those hurdles and stick to the EX30’s promised sub-$40,000 starting price.

2025 Volvo EX30
Pros
- Looks awesome outside and inside
- Zippy single- and dual-motor powertrains
- Comfortable seats and suspension
Cons
- Some irksome cost-cutting measures
- Tight second-row seats
- Waiting for it to go on sale

2025 Volvo XC40
For 2025, the XC40 subcompact SUV is now offered in golden beige Sand Dune metallic paint, while Bright Dusk paint is discontinued. On the entry-level Core trim, the Dark exterior design package is discontinued, while power-folding headrests become standard equipment. Previously known as Ultimate, the range-topping trim is now known as Ultra.

- Interesting and stylish interior materials
- Spacious cabin with useful storage areas
Cons
- Infotainment screen is small, system not so user-friendly
- Gets loud at highway speeds
- Starting to get on in age

2025 Volvo EX40
EX40 is a new name in Volvo’s 2025 lineup, but it’s not a new vehicle. It was previously known as the XC40 Recharge, that being an all-electric version of the XC40. The EX40 title now better aligns it with Volvo’s other EV SUV offerings. In international markets, Volvo has announced availability of a downloadable Performance driving mode for the 2025 EX40, but nothing has yet been confirmed for the United States model. Watch this space for updates when we learn more.

2025 Volvo EX40
Pros
- Speedy fun dual-motor model
- Attractive and upscale interior
- Excellent one-pedal drive function
Cons

2025 Volvo EC40
Like the EX40 it’s closely related to, the EC40 is another new name but not a new model in Volvo’s 2025 lineup. It was previously known as the C40. And likewise, Volvo is yet to issue updates specific to the United States market for 2025, but we’ll update this page when that information becomes available.

2025 Volvo EC40

2025 Volvo XC60
Volvo’s compact luxury crossover gets a new mild hybrid base engine badged B5, while its high-end Recharge powertrain is now known as T8 AWD Plug-In Hybrid. All models get door sill molding embossed with the Volvo wordmark, and Thunder Gray exterior paint is discontinued. On the midrange Plus trim, leatherette seat upholstery is now standard with leather offered as an upgrade. XC60 models equipped with the Charcoal leather interior now get Driftwood trim panels. The top Ultimate trim level has been renamed Ultra. Vapour Gray is a new exclusive color for the performance-oriented XC60 Polestar.

2025 Volvo XC60
Pros
- Powerful and quick PHEV powertrain
- Smooth mild hybrid engines
- Luxury look and feel throughout
Cons
- Tricky infotainment touchscreen

2025 Volvo XC90
This three-row Volvo SUV finds itself in an interesting situation for 2025. The venerated XC90 gets an update, with changes similar to the XC40 and XC60: A B5 engine is introduced, all models get Volvo-branded side molding, the Recharge powertrain is now called T8 AWD Plug-In Hybrid, and the Ultra trim level is renamed to Ultimate.
But there’s also a different, so-called 2025.5 XC90. There had been some speculation that the all-electric EX90 would replace the XC90 entirely, but that’s not the case—rather, Volvo breathes new life into the aging SUV by applying an extensive refresh. This 2025 XC90 uses most of the same body panels as before but has a redesigned front end with new headlights and other details. Its cabin receives a remodeled dashboard with a larger touchscreen running a new user interface, along with a renewed focus on sustainable materials. Powertrains carry over unchanged, but revised suspension promises an improved ride. Check out everything new on the 2025.5 Volvo XC90.

2025 Volvo XC90
Pros
- Remains compelling pre- and post-refresh
- Excellent crash safety scores
- Improved infotainment in 2025.5 model
Cons
- Fundamentally quite old
- Less third-row and cargo space than some rivals
- Ride quality suffers on large wheels

2025 Volvo EX90
The EX90 is a new addition to the 2025 Volvo SUV lineup. It’s essentially an all-electric equivalent of the XC90, similarly providing three rows of seats, a focus on safety, and sustainable luxury materials. Equipped with a dual-motor powertrain, the EX90 has a driving range of over 300 miles and 510 hp in its Performance specification. A built-in lidar array will eventually provide advanced self-driving capabilities when that software becomes available via over-the-air update. The EX90 is built in Volvo’s Ridgeville, South Carolina, factory.

2025 Volvo EX90
Pros
- Exceptionally quiet cabin
- Advanced self-driving tech coming soon
- Long range and fast charging
Cons
- No headliner grab handles
- Third row is on the small side
- Some early software bugs

2025 Volvo V60 Cross Country
The smaller of Volvo’s two off-road station wagons sees minor changes for 2025. On the V60 Cross Country, Thunder Gray exterior paint is discontinued, and the high-end Ultimate trim level is renamed Ultra.

Pros
- Infinite wagon cool points
- Useful Google infotainment assistant
- Comfortable ride quality
Cons
- Relaxed acceleration and performance
- Less cargo space than some compact SUVs
- Not available with T8 PHEV powertrain

2025 Volvo V90 Cross Country
On the V90 Cross Country all-terrain wagon, the high-end Ultimate trim is renamed Ultra for 2025. Additionally, that trim no longer includes massaging front seats, instead making those a standalone option.

2025 Volvo V90 Cross Country
Pros
- A tasteful and distinctive SUV alternative
- Many standard driver assist and active safety features
- Plenty of space and rugged capability
Cons
- XC90 is similar cost; far more spacious
- Ride quality suffers on larger wheels
- Disappointing deletion of massaging seats on Ultra trim

2026 Volvo EX60: What to Expect
Volvo is adjusting its approach to building EVs, but it’s not quitting. The automaker is likely working on new all-electric SUVs, with an EX60 as a potential upcoming addition. As the EX90 is essentially an EV equivalent to the XC90, the EX60 will be a compact luxury two-row SUV in the same vein as the XC60. Expect it to have minimalist styling, impressive active safety and semi-autonomous driving tech, and two rows of seats surrounded by sustainable luxurious materials. The Volvo EX60 could arrive for the 2026 model year.
