If there's a niche in the automotive landscape, you can count on BMW to find a way to fill it. The luxury automaker offers an astounding range of nine SUV models with distinctive body styles, offered with a variety of gasoline, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric drivetrains. To keep up with the tastes of its SUV-hungry buyers, BMW has worked over its lineup with a multitude of changes for the 2024 model year. Some models have simply received new paint colors while others have undergone full redesigns. Read on to see what's new for the 2024 BMW SUV lineup.

2024 BMW X1: What's New

After the introduction of the redesigned BMW X1 for 2023, the 2024 model year sees the addition of a new BMW X1 M35i xDrive. This sportier SUV receives an upgraded 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 engine, which produces 312 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Other enhancements include a stronger crankshaft, a model-specific oil supply system, the same main bearing shells and caps that are used on BMW's six-cylinder models, and an M-specific exhaust system.

The X1 M35i rides on BMW's electronically adjustable Adaptive M Suspension and uses M-specific brakes to stop. Nineteen-inch wheels are standard, and three 20-inch wheel designs are available. BMW outfits the cabin with model-specific appointments such as an Alcantara-trimmed instrument panel and sport seats trimmed in Alcantara with blue contrast stitching. As is typical with BMW's M models, the X1 M35i's M badging is bountiful inside and out. Finally, the new iDrive 9 infotainment software system has been introduced for the entire 2024 BMW X1 lineup.

2024 BMW X1: Pros and Cons

  • Unrefined transmission at low speeds

2024 BMW X2: What's New

The 2024 BMW X2 is the automaker's entry-level coupe-style SUV and receives a full redesign for the new model year. Thanks to its more sharply sloped roof, the new X2 looks more like a proper fastback SUV compared to the old design, which gave off hatchback vibes. The 2024 X2 is longer, wider, and taller than before, plus it has a bigger wheelbase, changes that should contribute to a more spacious interior and modestly increased cargo capacity.

Under the hood, a standard 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine develops 241 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque for xDrive28i models, and an enhanced powerplant churns out 312 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque for the M35i variant. Regardless of flavor, all X2 SUVs come equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. Front suspension tuning receives a major reworking, which BMW says should improve ride and handling.

Inside, dual curved displays utilize BMW's Android-derived iDrive 9. The new infotainment system is supported by a modern dashboard design and an interior that matches that of the BMW X1. The X2 is now offered with BMW's optional Driving Assistant Professional suite of safety tech, providing camera- and radar-enhanced cruise control. The automaker's Parking Assistant Plus feature adds automated parking assistance.

The 2024 BMW X5 represents the first major face-lift for the automaker's midsize luxury SUV since it was redesigned for the 2019 model year. The front fascia is easily distinguished from the previous model year thanks to slimmer headlights and a new interpretation of BMW's signature kidney grille, which is available with illumination for most trims. BMW restyled the X5's lower and side air inlets, further simplifying its appearance. In the rear, BMW designed the new fiberoptic taillights in the shape of an X and resculpted the bumper.

Both I-6 and V-8 models receive mild hybrid assistance. Six-cylinder sDrive40i and xDrive40i models now develop 375 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque while the eight-cylinder M60i XDrive, formerly called the M50i xDrive, remains the same as it was the year prior at 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. The BMW X5 M sits at the top of the range and the non-Competition model has been retired.

The plug-in hybrid, once called the X5 xDrive45e and now named the xDrive50e, has been updated to develop 483 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. On battery power alone, the xDrive50e can travel 40 miles on a single charge. BMW's IconicSounds Electric feature has also been added, which plays audio when the accelerator is pressed.

As part of the X6's midcycle refresh, the exterior receives a new front and rear fascia. The grille and supporting front aero accents receive restyling while the rear taillights have been redesigned in the shape of BMW's X logo. The lower rear bumper has been retooled, as well.

Under the hood, the X6 XDrive40i's 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6 engine now receives mild hybrid assistance and develops a total of 375 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. The X6 M60i xDrive, formerly called the M50i, also receives a mild hybrid setup but continues to develop the same 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque as it did before. The standard X6 M has been dropped, leaving the X6 M Competition as the only high-performance version of BMW's midsize fastback SUV.
