Rumble Seat Mustangs!
Galpin Ford in Southern California is well known for its footprint in the Ford world. It was founded in 1946 and has had a heavy influence in racing (NASCAR and off-road especially). Galpin was also one of the first dealerships to modify its new vehicles with custom packages, essentially helping start the “sport truck” and van crazes. Over the years, Galpin has created a few special editions and one-off concepts, one of which was the “Rumble Seat” Mustang in 1967. Galpin built two 1967 Mustangs, one a blue convertible and one a white hardtop with a sunroof and vinyl top, that featured 1920s- and ’30s-style rumble seats in place of the trunk. This photo was taken at the 1968 Motor Trend 500 at Riverside International Raceway while the cars were going through the famed “esses” leading to Turn 6. Both cars were sold back in the day, and the convertible version has made it back to Galpin Ford’s impressive collection, where it now sits. What about the “dogs” in the rumble seats in this photo? Galpin’s mascot has always been “Shaggy Dog,” so it seemed appropriate to stick dudes in Shaggy Dog costumes in the rumble seats.

I came about my automotive passions honestly—my dad was a heavy equipment mechanic (think bulldozers and other heavy earth movers) and was also an amateur go-kart racer when I was a baby. “Helping” him work on a friend’s sprint car when I was 4 or 5 years old placed the speed gene in my DNA and I’ve been a certified, hardcore gearhead ever since.
My dream was always to race in the Indy 500 but my fallback plan was to somehow be involved in the automotive industry, and I was in the right place at the right time to get in the door at the top automotive publishing company in the world.
I am currently the editor of Mustang Monthly and have a long history with Fords in not just the publishing world, but also drag racing, road racing, and car shows, but I honestly love any kind of motorized contraption that looks cool and/or goes like stink.
