Where is Ohio George’s Malco Mustang Today?

The last time we were at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles getting ready to scour the archives for cool old Mustang photos, we walked by this Mustang down in the “vault,” and immediately recognized it as Ohio George Montgomery’s 1967 Mustang—the Malco Gasser. We don’t think the car has ever made it to the show floor upstairs at the museum, instead residing in the basement vault getting ready for its close-up—someday.

This car debuted at the 1967 NHRA Spring Nationals in Bristol, Tennessee, and changed Gassers forever. It was at corporate Ford’s insistence that Ohio George race what Ford sold. This car proved so superior in handling and performance that George’s previous Gasser, the “World’s Wildest Willys,” was permanently retired. The Malco Gasser was powered by a 6-71-blown 427ci SOHC Ford engine that made approximately 1,200hp on pump gas. It was raced until May 1975, running a best of 8.12 at 173.07 mph in the quarter. George set five NHRA national records with this car and won Super Eliminator at the 1969 NHRA Spring Nationals before replacing it with the blown, then turbocharged Boss 429-powered red 1969 SportsRoof, now owned by Mustang Monthly contributor and famed Mustang restorer Bob Perkins.

I came about my automotive passions honestly—my dad was a heavy equipment mechanic (think bulldozers and other heavy earth movers) and was also an amateur go-kart racer when I was a baby. “Helping” him work on a friend’s sprint car when I was 4 or 5 years old placed the speed gene in my DNA and I’ve been a certified, hardcore gearhead ever since.
My dream was always to race in the Indy 500 but my fallback plan was to somehow be involved in the automotive industry, and I was in the right place at the right time to get in the door at the top automotive publishing company in the world.
I am currently the editor of Mustang Monthly and have a long history with Fords in not just the publishing world, but also drag racing, road racing, and car shows, but I honestly love any kind of motorized contraption that looks cool and/or goes like stink.
