The Most Badass Overlanding Trucks and SUVs at the 2024 L.A. Auto Show

The Los Angeles Auto Show is slowly transforming into a mini–Overlanding Expo over in West Hall.

If you venture towards the back half of the Los Angeles Convention Center’s West Hall during the Los Angeles Auto Show, you’ll be greeted by a plethora of off-roading trucks and SUVs. The overlanding section of the show has seemingly expanded versus last year, so we get a chance to see some more great examples of getting off the regular trails than we did last year.

Classic Land Cruiser Looks

We’ve covered the Renoca Off-Road Windansea kit for the Tacoma previously, but this is the first time seeing it in real life.

It’s not that bad looking in real life, but the $16,000 MSRP might still be a turn off for most Tacoma owners.

This version is owned by the lead designer of the Renoca kit, Chloe Kuo, and features a Built Right custom front bumper, 4WP rear bumper, Old Man Emu suspension, and a Prinsu roof rack and RCI bed rack that’s topped off by a Roam Vagabond Lite tent. The Method 705 wheels are wrapped in BFGoodrich KO3 tires and auxiliary lighting is handled by Baja Designs.

A Trophy Truck Camper?

It’s not really a Chevrolet Silverado, but the Camburg Trophy Truck makes for a unique camper solution.

2024 Los Angeles Auto Show Overlanders and Campers 8

Yep, you’re seeing a tent mounted to the back of a Trophy Truck.

The mounting solution is rather innovative considering there isn’t a real bed to mount the custom bed rack to.

Though, you’re not going to be able to carry much in terms of camping gear under the tent either. It’s all taken up by the massive spare tires, tools, rear-mounted radiator, and tools for emergency servicing. But this angle gives you a great look at just how this tent was mounted and at least looks fully functional.

Welcome to the Truckhouse

While that Trophy Truck camper is wild, it’s hard to beat a massive-sized truck with an equally massive camper mounted to the back.

This Ram Heavy Duty is first modified from a chassis cab truck by AEV to create the Prospector XL.

Which means you have enough truck to fit this man-sized front winch bumper and enough forward lighting to keep you from missing the sun at night.

The AEV Salta XD wheels are wrapped in BFGoodrich HD-Terrain T/A MT tires. From what the Truckhouse rep said, these are military-level tires and required a special order for the 40x13.50R18 rubbers.

Attempting at keeping these 40s on the ground is a set of Bilstein 8100 piggyback dampers.

What sets the Truckhouse camper apart from most others is its construction. Rather than rely on aluminum or even fiberglass, the camper shell is made from carbon fiber. Again, the starting point being a chassis cab, this also allowed Truckhouse to create a proper cabin tunnel between the cab and cabin. Flex is still an issue, but the carbon shell should allow for more flex without suffering major structural issues.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t climb into the camper to shoot interior shots and the tall stature didn’t allow your 6’ 1” photographer and author to sneak shots thought the open window ports.

Classic Land Cruiser Overlander

Built by Outdoor Vehicle Recreation (OVR), this 1999 LC100 Toyota Land Cruiser was a great classic overlander build. The old school graphics were matched by some tasteful modern (yet appropriately old-looking) touches like the Nomad 501 Convoy aluminum wheels with Toyo Tires Open Country A/T III tires.

The swing-up rear quarter glass was also an interesting touch and really adds some additional cargo utility that more SUVs should come from the factory with. These even feature hydraulic lift cylinders like its main liftgate.

Further utility features include the ARB Outback Cargo Storage sliding drawer system. You’ll also notice the Dometic fridge on the sliding shelf.

It’s hard to see, but this LC100 features a two-tone with an Avery Dennison Supreme Wrapping Film wrap in “Rugged Marsh Green” on the hood and roof.

Fox of a Camper

Built off a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado, the Fox Factory Edition is a Baja chaser of an overlander. Under its carbon fiber hood sits a 700-hp Whipple supercharged 6.2-liter V-8. Exhaust flows out of the engine via a Borla dual exhaust system. The Dana D60 rear axle has an ARB air locker stabbed in.

Other details include Carbon Reveal carbon fiber front fenders and bedsides, Vented high clearance steel prerunner bumpers with frame-mounted recovery points, Nacho LED lighting, and an HD bed rack with a spare tire carrier.

Topping that bed rack is a GFC Pro V2 rooftop tent.

They Just Keep Getting Bigger

If you thought that Truckhouse rig was big, you ain’t seen nothing. The Krug Expeditions Bedrock XT2 is built off an Arctic Trucks AT44 6x6, which itself is based on the F550 Super Duty.

Equally massive are its Continental MPT81 tires in 365/80R20. For those of you unfamiliar with the metric system, these are nearly 43 inches tall and nearly 15-inch-wide sized tires. If you find a way to get this six-wheel drive beast stuck, good luck with getting it out. We’re pretty sure you won’t be able to.

An Under Rated SUV for Camping?

Here’s an SUV that you don’t ever see converted into a camper. This 2017 Nissan Armada is built by Campsite 204 and renamed the “Gnarmada.” It features a full Baja Designs off-road lighting while it’s Titan 7 17x8.5 T-AK2 forged aluminum wheels are wrapped in Nitto Tires Ridge Grapplers in 35x12.50R17.

The ARB Awning Room is attached to a Dash Offroad Roof Rack. Dash Offroad also supplies its skid plate kit, rock sliders, and the Predator front bumper.

Scout’s Honor

With all the news about the rebirth of Scout, it’s always great to see more classic International Scouts get the love thanks to this new publicity. This Scout II is a restomod mixed with all the overlanding gear that makes this a great classic to take out on your next adventure.

The James Baroud rooftop tent it attached to a drip rail mounted roof rack. This rack is also home to a set of nine Baja Designs XL Sport LED lighting.

The wheels are a set of KMC Wheels GRS beadlocks that mechanically secure Nitto Tire Trail Grappler M/T tires in 35x11.50R17.
