2026 Toyota 4Runner Expert Review

Toyota’s terrain-conquering 4Runner has been making trails and the great outdoors accessible to the masses since the mid-1980s. The midsize SUV is essentially the brand’s entry-level off-roader. Similar go-anywhere SUVs include the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler.

The 4Runner isn’t the only iconic off-roader Toyota offers. Read all about the Land Cruiser here.

What’s New

Toyota introduced the sixth-generation 4Runner for the 2025 model year. Given how new the SUV is we don’t expect any significant updates this year.

What We Think

Toyota largely understood the assignment when it came to updating the 4Runner. Driving dynamics have markedly improved both on- and off-road, with models like the TRD Pro and Trailhunter capable of serious performance beyond the pavement. The new model’s powertrains boast increased output and improved efficiency, and the rear seats are even livable now.

Letdowns include an interior that isn’t as exciting as the exterior, rear seats that don’t fold flat, and an underfloor battery in the hybrid that cuts interior cargo capacity. With the 4Runner’s great capability comes somewhat hefty retail pricing, but then rivals like the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler are in the same relative price range.

Performance and MPGs

The 2026 4Runner will likely continue to share powertrains with the Tacoma midsize pickup. That means the base setup will feature a 2.4-liter turbocharged inline-four engine making as much as 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. Every 4Runner features an eight-speed automatic transmission. Toyota estimates RWD models with this powertrain should return 20/24–26 mpg city/highway while 4WD models should get 19–20/24–25 mpg.

With the i-Force Max hybrid powertrain, the 4Runner’s turbo-four is paired to an automatic transmission with an electric motor. Output increases to 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. Toyota only offers the i-Force Max arrangement with 4WD; it returns an estimated 23/24 mpg city/highway.

Safety Features

With the SUV’s standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of driver assists, the 2026 4Runner should come with pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane tracing assist, dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high-beams, road sign assist, and Proactive Drive Assist. Blind-spot monitoring will also be included. Available assists will include a 360-degree view monitor and self-parking.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

Front legroom remains essentially unchanged from the previous generation 4Runner (up 0.1 inch, to 41.8 inches) but second-row passengers gain almost 2 inches, for a new total of 34.8 inches. Models equipped with a third row are available. Cargo capacity doesn’t impress like it used to unless you get a two-row non-hybrid trim.

Cargo Space (behind third/second/first rows)

  • 2024 Toyota 4Runner (3-row): 9.0/47.2/89.7 cubic feet
  • 2026 Toyota 4Runner (3-row): 12.1/44.8/84.4 cubic feet
  • 2026 Toyota 4Runner (2-row): na/48.4/90.2 cubic feet
  • 2026 Toyota 4Runner Hybrid (2-row): na/42.6/82.6 cubic feet

Technology

The base model features an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, eight speakers, and a gauge cluster with a 7.0-inch screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard. Upgrades come in the form of a 14-inch central interface, 14-speaker JBL premium audio, and 12.3-inch driver display. Power front seats and a wireless phone charger are also available.

Multiple Ways to Get Dirty

Specifically off-road-focused models include the 4Runner TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, and overlanding-centric Trailhunter. With a standard rear limited-slip differential and Toyota's Active Traction Control and an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range on 4WD models, the SUV practically begs to leave the pavement. Features like downhill assist control, multi-terrain monitoring system, and a remotely controlled automatic anti-roll bar disconnect are also available.

Pricing and Availability

Look for the 2026 4Runner to arrive at dealerships in late 2025. Base model pricing should start around $43,000, while the top trim is expected to start at roughly $69,000.
