2014 Scion xD Expert Review

Vehicle Overview

While the iQ may be the smallest Scion, the xD is still the automaker's smallest four-door hatchback. The 2014 Scion xD hatchback is powered by a 128-hp 1.8-liter I-4 with 125 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. The subcompact Scion xD is rated 27/33 mpg city/highway with either transmission. While the xD returns with a few updates for 2014, the quirky hatchback has been on sale in nearly the same configuration since it arrived for the 2008 model year.

Although the Scion xD comes well equipped, there are some personalization options and a special-edition model celebrating 10 years of the Scion brand. In the Scion lineup, the more powerful and boxier xD is just over $1000 more, and in the sub-$20,000 price range, there are a number of four-door hatchback alternatives including the Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, Chevrolet Sonic, and Nissan Versa Note. None of those vehicles, however, include Scion's positive buying experience.

With the 2014 lineup, Scion introduced a new standard touch-screen audio system with Bluetooth, HD radio, USB ports, and steering wheel controls on all models. A Bespoke premium infotainment system with navigation, Aha apps with 30,000 free audio stations including sports, news, and entertainment is available. The 2014 Scion xD hatchback hasn't been rated by the NHTSA, though it is considered a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS.

New for 2014

For 2014, the Scion xD hatchback gets the same standard 6.1-inch touch-screen audio system or optional BeSpoke premium audio system with navigation and Aha radio as the rest of the lineup. The Series 10 anniversary package includes premium stitching, 16-inch graphite alloy wheels, illuminated shift knob, and more. New two-tone exterior paint options include Black Sand Pearl/Magnetic Gray Metallic or Classic Silver Metallic/Blue Streak Metallic.
