2014 Mitsubishi Mirage Expert Review

Vehicle Overview

The Mitsubishi Mirage is the Japanese automaker's B-segment entry, making its U.S. debut for 2014. Mitsubishi may be late to the subcompact party, but its price advantage may attract budget-minded small hatchback buyers.

Mitsubishi says the Mirage's exterior design is aerodynamically optimized, but that doesn't help the styling from looking a generation behind the competition. All 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage hatchbacks are powered by a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine, which produces 74 hp and 74 lb-ft of torque. That engine comes mated to either a CVT or five-speed manual transmission. Models equipped with the CVT are EPA-rated at a best-in-class 37/44 mpg city/highway, while manual-equipped hatchbacks are rated 34/42 mpg. The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage comes standard with electric power steering, which allows for a tight turning radius.

Standard features for the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage include automatic climate control, power windows and mirrors, a tilt steering wheel, 60/40 split folding rear seat, and four-speaker CD audio system with USB and iPod inputs and MP3 playback capability. DE models add 14-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, hands-free keyless entry, push-button start, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, Bluetooth, and a faux-leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel. At the Mirage's 2013 New York auto show debut, we said its interior "doesn't necessarily feel as cheap as it is," praising the feel of the faux-leather bits.

The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage has not yet been crash-tested by the IIHS or NHTSA.
