2022 Mazda MX-30 Expert Review

Reviewed by Bob Hernandez

The MX-30 subcompact SUV is Mazda's first electric vehicle and the first in a wave of additional electrified models coming from the brand. Along with the MX-30 EV, expect a plug-in hybrid EV version of the new SUV as well as a plug-in hybrid for Mazda's new large platform and a traditional hybrid for a new American-made crossover. The MX-30 rides on the same platform as the 3 compact sedan and CX-30 subcompact SUV.

Performance, Range, and Charging

The Mazda MX-30 EV employs a 35.5 kWh lithium-ion battery and a single FWD electric motor that makes a peak 144 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque. In MotorTrend testing, it returned a leisurely 8.6-second 0-60 mph acceleration time.

More troubling, however, are the MX-30's range and charging capabilities. The EPA rates this Mazda's range at a paltry 100 miles, and in our observations its charging would peak at about 36 kW on a Level 3 charger, very slow in the modern context. Furthermore, one-pedal driving is not possible.

On the plus side, the driving experience is otherwise typical Mazda. Equipped with the automaker's yaw-controlling electric G-Vectoring Control Plus (e-GVC) feature for improved cornering and stability, the MX-30's handling is accurate and agile.

Design Highlights

Unlike other Mazda SUVs, the MX-30 has a distinctive look, with a smaller grille up front and at the rear CX-30-aping circular taillights in housings that pop out from the bodywork. A look at the SUV's side profile reveals rear-hinged secondary doors on each side that further distinguish the MX-30, especially when opened, which exposes the absence of a traditional B pillar. Additionally, the Mazda MX-30 is available in two-tone exterior colors.

Inside, the cabin makes an impression with a new floating center console and through the use of cork, recycled fabrics, and other sustainable materials.

Technology

The MX-30 comes equipped with an 8.8-inch dial-controlled infotainment screen on top of the dash, which contains Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. That's supplemented by a 7.0-inch display mounted in the center console that controls various climate and comfort settings. There's also a 7.0-inch display in the instrument cluster, above which is a standard head-up display. Two USB ports are mounted in the front row, and a wireless charging pad is available. The base sound system comprises eight speakers, while Premium Plus models get a Bose 12-speaker arrangement.

Safety Ratings and Features

Although it hasn't been evaluated by the IIHS, the MX-30 scored a five-star overall score in the NHTSA's testing, the highest possible result.

Driver-assist and active safety features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams.

Return of the Mazda Rotary—Sort Of

Enthusiasts will do a double take when they learn of the Mazda MX-30 hybrid's rotary powertrain—that is, until they realize the system uses it not to drive the wheels but to replenish the SUV's batteries. Characterized as a rotary generator, the evolved Wankel engine will serve as a range extender for the MX-30 hybrid's powertrain. Whether or not this feature would actually make it into production hasn't always been clear, but the latest reports indicate that it's going to happening.
