2026 Lexus LS Expert Review
Reviewed by Bob Hernandez
Arriving in 1989 as one of the flagship models that launched Lexus in the U.S., the LS has long defined the brand’s vision of luxury. For 36 years, it served as a showcase of comfort, refinement, and meticulous craftsmanship.
The LS bows out after the 2026 model year, closing the book on a pioneering sedan that helped establish Lexus as a global player. Luxury full-size sedan competitors include the Genesis G90, Audi A8, and BMW 7 Series.
What’s New
In its final year, the Lexus LS500 is only offered as the mono-spec LS500 AWD Heritage Edition, with only 250 units set to be produced. Model-specific features include:
Exterior
- Ninety Noir black exterior paint
- Dark Gray Metallic finish 20-inch alloy wheels
Interior
- Rioja Red interior
- Etched Lexus LS Heritage Edition emblem on center console
- LS silhouette embroidered on headrests
What We Think
The current-generation LS still delivers on comfort, craftsmanship, and serenity. Its cabin remains a standout, filled with exquisite materials and details that make it one of the most luxurious spaces in the segment. On the road, the twin-turbo V-6 provides smooth, confident power, pairing well with the LS’ quiet, composed demeanor.
The now-discontinued hybrid model aimed to boost efficiency but sacrificed some refinement in the process. Its powertrain felt less polished and less responsive, making the standard V-6 the more satisfying choice.
As far as weaknesses go, rear-seat space is tighter than in some rivals, and the infotainment, though improved, isn’t as advanced as it could be. The LS is also not tuned as a sporty sedan, which may disappoint those seeking sharper dynamics.
Overall, we value the LS for its luxury-first approach, emphasizing calm and craftsmanship over flash. But after years on the market, it’s no longer as modern or cutting-edge as competitors—a reality that makes its 2026 discontinuation both unsurprising and bittersweet.
Top-Ranked Competitors:
MotorTrend Tested
For 2026, the hybrid is gone, leaving only the gas-powered LS. Every model now uses Lexus’ 3.4-liter twin-turbo V-6 paired with a 10-speed automatic, producing 416 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is standard this year. In MotorTrend testing, a same-generation 2021 LS500 RWD hit 60 mph in 5.0 seconds, which is respectably quick for such a large luxury sedan.
By comparison, the Genesis G90 mild hybrid pairs a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 with an electric motor for a combined 409 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque. In MotorTrend testing, it reached 60 mph in 5.4 seconds—slower than the LS.
MPGs and Range
The gas-powered LS with AWD—the only configuration offered this year—returns 17/27 mpg city/highway, giving it a total driving range of up to 456 miles.
By comparison, the G90 mild hybrid matches the LS in city mileage but falls behind on the highway, returning 24 mpg. Its range tops out at just 386 miles, due in part to lower efficiency and a smaller fuel tank.
Safety Features
Every LS is equipped with Lexus Safety System+ 3.0. Standard features include:
- Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection
- Road sign recognition
- Lane keeping and centering
- Automatic high-beams
- Adaptive cruise control
Cargo Space and Interior Room
Every LS500 comes with a generously sized trunk. Rear legroom doesn’t quite match the 7 Series, but backseat passengers still enjoy more space than in the G90.
Technology
Infotainment
All 2026 models include a 12.3-inch driver display, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a 10.0-inch head-up display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless phone charger, and six USB ports are also standard.
Sound System
A Mark Levinson 23-speaker sound system is standard with every model.
