2024 Kia K5 Expert Review

Reviewed by Alex Leanse

Once known as the Optima, Kia's midsize sedan is now called the K5. It was introduced for 2021, combining the sensibility and value the Optima was known for with a far more interesting exterior design. Rivals to the K5 include the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, and Hyundai Sonata .

What's New

For 2024, the only change is the addition of standard heated seats on the GT-Line FWD trim. That follows Kia's habit of gradually adding new features to the K5 each year; for 2023 details like laminated windows, a heated steering wheel, and panoramic moonroof were added depending on trim level.

What We Think

With its Z-shaped running lights and modish full-width taillight, the K5 is hard to miss. The car is a looker, as its aggressive front end and sleek roofline come across as something more premium than a humble Kia. That notion continues inside, where attractive trim choices accent a spacious, stylish, functional cabin.

Yet within the K5 range, perhaps only the GT model drives as sporty as it looks. That range-topping version's engine lays down plenty of tire-spinning power, but the K5's standard engine is a bit wheezy. Furthermore, the steering, handling, and braking don't provide any particularly inspiring sensations.

The K5 still appeals to practical considerations. It includes many features for the price, and Kia's long warranty provides assurance as the miles add on. Even so, it might not be the midsize sedan to pick. The mechanically similar Hyundai Sonata feels more refined, and the Honda Accord remains competitive in its new generation. Both of those have hybrid models, while the K5 doesn't (although it's the only one offered with AWD).

Performance and MPGs

Every 2024 K5 is powered by a turbocharged engine. The base offering is a 1.6-liter mill that produces 180 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. It's joined to an eight-speed automatic transmission, with FWD standard and AWD available on select trims. In MotorTrend testing, an FWD model with this engine accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 7.6 seconds. Fuel economy rates at 27/37 mpg city/highway with FWD, and 25/33 mpg with AWD.

For more power and performance, Kia offers the K5 GT. It packs a 2.5-liter turbo-four making 290 hp and 311 lb-ft. That power hits the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, good for a 5.4-second 0-60-mph time. However, fuel economy drops to 24/32 mpg.

Safety Ratings and Features

For 2024, the K5 once again earns the NHTSA's five-star overall safety rating, the highest possible core. In years past, the K5 been deemed an IIHS Top Safety Pick +, also the highest possible accolade.

Entry-level models come equipped with driver assist and active safety tech including front automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and automatic high-beams. On higher-end models, features like adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and side and rear cross-traffic alert are added.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

Front-row legroom in the K5 is nearly unparalleled, even by larger vehicles. However, its second-row legroom and trunk space are more typical for the segment.

The K5 is a new nameplate for Kia in North America, but the midsize sedan rivaling the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry isn't as new as you might think. Rather, the K5 is a redesigned and renamed Kia Optima.
