2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee Expert Review

Jeep has used the Grand Cherokee name on its midsize SUVs since the 1990s, but unlike some competitors that have been around as long, the model has always utilized a unibody chassis. These days, in addition to the standard five-seater gas-powered version, it's offered in a three-row L model and 4xe plug-in hybrid (both reviewed separately). Rivals with similar off-road swagger to the 2024 Grand Cherokee include the Subaru Outback and Toyota 4Runner .

What We Think
Even-keeled power delivery and excellent on-road manners are two markers of the current-generation Grand Cherokee. It's too bad there's no longer an optional V-8 engine, but the standard six-cylinder powertrain never left us short on grunt. And although the Trailhawk trim is now only available with the 4xe plug-in hybrid, every Grand Cherokee—like most Jeeps—is a competent off-roader.
Cabin materials feel premium, and the SUV's Uconnect infotainment is easy to navigate and use. Indeed, there's an abundance of technology features across the trim range. The Jeep has its drawbacks, though. Competitors offer more cabin space and standard AWD. The Grand Cherokee is also on the pricier end of the class. But we get why it has become so popular—its blend of capability and comfort is something few rivals get right.
Performance and MPGs
The Grand Cherokee's tried-and-true 3.6-liter non-turbo V-6 returns for another year of service, again linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Output is rated at 293 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, and the Jeep can be outfitted with RWD or AWD. There's also an available rear limited-slip differential, two levels of available transfer cases, and an optional air suspension that can add 2.5 inches of ground clearance for 10.9 inches total. We launched a same-generation 2022 Grand Cherokee Limited AWD to 60 mph in 7.3 seconds.
Fuel economy for the 2023 six-cylinder models is identical, 19/26 mpg city/highway, and we expect about the same for the 2024 models. That's marginally better than the 2023 Honda Passport's 19/24 mpg city/highway, which employs a less powerful and smaller 3.5-liter V-6.
Without the V-8, towing capacity drops. Previously the max was 7,200 pounds, but with the V-6 powertrain the Grand Cherokee is rated to tow 1,000 pounds less.
Safety Features
Lane keeping, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring are standard on every 2024 Grand Cherokee. Laredo base models also come with parking sensors and automatic headlights. Automatic high-beams are unlocked at the Limited trim level, and standard traffic sign recognition comes with the Summit model.
Cargo Space and Interior Room
There's room for five in every 2024 Grand Cherokee, but the Jeep is sort of a goldilocks when it comes to space. It offers more front legroom than the 2023 Honda Passport but less than the 2024 Subaru Outback. There's more cargo space behind the back seat in the Grand Cherokee than there is the Outback but not as much as what's in the Passport.
Technology
Jeep gets generous with standard tech in the Grand Cherokee, even down to the Laredo base trim. Each is equipped with an 8.4-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, two-phone Bluetooth compatibility, six speakers, and LED interior lighting. The driver gets a power seat and a 10.3-inch customizable gauge cluster screen. Over-the-air updates are standard.
Limited models step it up with a power liftgate, remote engine start, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, and power front passenger's seat. A hands-free liftgate, power-folding side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, ventilated front seats, and 10-speaker Alpine sound system are standard on the Overland. It starts to get really fancy on the Grand Cherokee Summit, which comes with a 10.1-inch touchscreen and massaging seats, but that's not where the options end. Also available are a 10.3-inch front passenger touchscreen, dual 10.1-inch-screen rear seat entertainment system, and McIntosh 20-speaker premium audio.
Trim Levels and Prices
The 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee is available in four trims this year: Laredo, Limited, Overland, and Summit. Pricing for the Grand Cherokee Laredo RWD base model starts at more than $41,000 and exceeds $70,000 for the Summit Reserve 4x4.
