2026 Buick Encore GX Expert Review
Reviewed by Bob Hernandez
Positioned between the entry-level Envista and the larger Envision in Buick’s small S lineup, the Encore GX is the least expensive way to get an AWD SUV from the brand.
The 2026 Buick Encore GX returns with more updates as it competes in the subcompact SUV segment against competitors like the Toyota Corolla Cross, Hyundai Kona, and Honda HR-V. If AWD isn’t a must-have we’d recommend looking into the Buick Envista.
What’s New
- Brilliant Red exterior paint replaces Cinnabar Metallic
- A tire inflator kit is standard and replaces the Encore GX’s spare tire, which becomes optional
- The rear cargo net has been discontinued
What We Think
The 2026 Encore GX puts its best foot forward when the baby ute is cruising around town or heading out on an unrushed road trip. Comfortable front seats, decent first-row space, and clean screen graphics make any trip a breeze for the driver and a plus one.
The GX even offers some trail-going capability, as well as impressive composure over rough paved surfaces.
We’re not sure the crossover has evolved enough beyond past versions, though. With the more powerful of the lineup’s three-cylinder engines, power delivery sounds and feels unrefined.
Both engines return lackluster fuel economy for being so small. If you get the AWD model, the driver still must physically turn on the AWD system; other automakers make the switchover automatically.
Perhaps the hardest thing to reconcile about the Encore GX is that it’s marketed as a premium crossover and comes with a commensurate price. Even in its top spec, though, the Buick doesn’t quite impress. No matter if you're focused on value, efficiency, practicality, or luxury, better options—like the Honda HR-V or even Buick’s own Envista—are available.
Performance and MPGs
Most 2026 Encore GX come with a 1.3-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that produces 155 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque. Regardless of engine, FWD models use a CVT automatic while AWDs come with a nine-speed automatic transmission.
With AWD, the SUV can accelerate to 60 mph in a MotorTrend-tested 8.9 seconds, which is on the slow side. Fuel economy last year came in at 29/31 mpg city/highway with FWD and 26/28 mpg with AWD.
The 2026 Encore GX’s base engine is a 1.2-liter turbo three-cylinder rated at 137 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque.
Offered only with FWD, fuel economy ratings come to 30/31 mpg city/highway with regular gas and 22/23 mpg with an E85 ethanol blend.
Safety Ratings and Features
NHTSA gives both FWD and AWD variants a five-star overall safety rating and five stars in every test except rollover resistance, where it received only four out of five stars. Not bad for such a small SUV.
Every Encore GX features Buick’s Driver Confidence package standard. It includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane keeping, a Following Distance Indicator, and automatic high-beams. Blind-spot and rear cross-traffic monitoring are also included, and upgrades consist of rain-sensing wipers and a 360 camera system.
Cargo Space and Interior Room
First-row legroom compares favorably to the HR-V. Compared to the Honda and Kia Seltos, cargo capacity could be better.
Technology
Buick equips every 2026 Encore GX with an 11.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 8.0-inch driver information display, active noise cancelling, and remote start.
Higher trim levels and optional packages unlock a wireless phone charger, power heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a hands-free power liftgate.
Trim Levels and Prices
The 2026 Buick Encore GX is available with three trims this year: Preferred, Sport Touring, and Avenir.
We recommend starting your search with an 2026 Encore GX that has AWD. Otherwise, the Envista offers a spacious rear seat and more alluring exterior sheetmetal.
Also, know that power seats aren’t standard; they’re a package addition on Preferred and Sport Touring trims.
