2024 Audi A4 Expert Review
Reviewed by Bob Hernandez
Audi's bestselling compact car is the A4, which sits above the A3 and below the A6 in the sedan range and also comes as a wagon (Allroad). This generation first went on sale in the U.S. for 2017 and received a refresh for 2020. The 2024 model gains several technology updates, including new standard driver assist features. If the A3 is too small and the A6 too expensive, the A4 might be the sweet spot.

What We Think
Audi claims the sporty 2024 A4 S Line makes 261 horsepower, but we're calling BS. We swear its turbo-four feels like it's making an additional 50 hp. It can put that grunt to good use, too, rewarding spirited driving with athletic reflexes and fun dynamics.
Exterior styling is sharp. Interior design is a touch more subdued but employs stellar materials and great build quality. The cabin also hosts several tech features, our favorite being the rich and powerful Bang & Olufsen upgrade audio.
In our experience with the car, several infotainment software glitches proved frustrating. The A4 S Line's ride was also stiff on 19-inch wheels with the lower profile tire, probably too stiff to call this trim level a pure luxury car. Fortunately, Audi offers several variants, and the wagon is perhaps the most tempting.
Performance and MPGs
Every model in the 2024 A4 lineup is equipped with standard Quattro AWD. Most get Audi's S Tronic seven-speed automatic transmission, except for the sporty S4, which comes with an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic.
The A4 base model (or 40 TFSI in Audi speak) features a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four that produces 201 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy estimates for the 2024 model come in at 26/35 mpg city/highway.
A4 S Line sedan and Allroad wagon models also come with a 2.0-liter turbo-four powertrain (denoted 45 TFSI). It makes 60 more hp and 37 more lb-ft of torque than the base configuration but should also return worse fuel economy. The 2023 A4 S Line sedan gets 24/32 mpg city/highway, and the Allroad estimate is 23/30 mpg.
How Quick Is the 2024 A4?
In midgrade S Line trim, a samegeneration 2022 A4 we tested zipped from 0 to 60 mph in a respectable 5.2 seconds. That makes it as quick as the 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia Q4 Ti Sport, which comes with a more powerful 2.0-liter turbo-four. It's also quicker than less powerful rivals, namely the 2023 BMW 330i xDrive and Mercedes-Benz C300 4Matic.
Safety Ratings and Features
Adaptive cruise control, a lane keeping system, and more advanced parking sensors are newly standard on every 2024 A4 trim level. Each already featured standard forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high-beams. Blind-spot and rear/side cross-traffic monitoring are available, and there's also a new optional Navigation package that comes with Audi's predictive adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition.
When this generation of the A4 was refreshed for 2020, it was an IIHS Top Safety Pick. The rating improved to a Top Safety Pick+ when the lineup received standard LED headlights for 2023. Last year's car also received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, but this only applies to A4 sedans. Allroad wagons and S4 performance models have not received an overall rating from the agency.
Cargo Space and Interior Room
Rear legroom in the A4 sedan compares favorably to the 2024 Alfa Romeo Giulia and 2023 Genesis G70. Trunk space is on the lower side of the class but not as limited as what's in the G70.
For ultimate A4 cargo space, the Allroad wagon offers 24.2 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 58.5 cubes with the rear seat folded.
Technology
Every 2024 A4 picks up a standard heated steering wheel, and all models except the Premium base trim also get standard remote start through the MyAudi phone app. The sedan's infotainment system with 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto returns, as does an instrument cluster that features either a 7.0-inch or 12.3-inch display. Ten speakers are standard, anda 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen system is available.
Trim Levels and Prices
The 2024 Audi A4 is available in three trims this year: Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. Pricing starts at more than $42,000 for the A4 40 Premium base model and can get as high as over $52,000 for the A4 S Line 45 Prestige.
The 2024 A4 Allroad wagon is more expensive, starting at around $48,000 for the Premium model. Prices climbs to almost $57,000 for the Prestige top trim.
